Food for thought – has marketing ever changed?
The question on all of our minds is ‘has marketing ever changed’? Whilst passing ideas back and forth it was interesting to hear that we often suggest similar products to one another. Marketing trends appear across our industry and we seem to follow along with what’s ‘hot’ at that point in time. This can even be said since the 1800’s when Charles Mackay published a book. It was called Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. Although he talks about trends that have passed such as haunted houses, prophecies and potions he does mention one thing that is particularly fascinating:
“We find that whole communities suddenly fix their minds upon one object, and go mad in its pursuit; that millions of people become simultaneously impressed with one delusion, and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first.”
It’s clear to see that we are creatures of habit!
